Hiking Mt. Shkelzeni...

"We hiked to the top of Mt. Shkelzeni on August 7th, which is when the locals of Bajram Curri hike to the top in honor of the Bektashi sector of the Muslim religion. The hike took us about 4.5 hours to the top and about 2 hours to get down. The views were out of this world. It was the most locals I have seen hiking since I have been in the country (about 7 months). Many were eager to make it to the top and explained that even though they were tired they did this as a symbol of their faith and honor towards their religion. It was remarkable because I was very tired and I saw older women, around the age of 60, trekking up to the top. We went with three Albanian women and it took them 8 hours to get to the top, but when they did you could tell that it was worth it to them by the expressions on their faces. They had a true since of accomplishment.

I look out at Mt. Shkelzeni out of my bedroom window every morning, so that was where my motivation came from and where I earned my since of accomplishment. We had a private ride from Bajram Curri to "Tropoja i vjeter" or the village of Old Tropoja, where the trail started to the top."

Hiking "Shkallë e keqe"...

"We climbed 'the bad stairs' with a group of about 15 Albanian youth that are interested in preserving nature and are part of an Outdoor Ambassadors group. The climb was moderate in difficulty but was easy for the high schoolers. It was a beautiful day and worth climbing for the awesome view!

We got a private minibus that cost 200L a piece but was worth it because it dropped us off right at the beginning of the hike and was there to pick us up when we called him which was good because it started to rain.

I highly recommend this to any outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. I'm planning on taking the hike again!"
